According to the recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of operations management is expected to grow somewhere around 12.4 percent between 2012 and 2022. This is expected to be driven by the creation of new business. This means that an estimated 244,100 jobs in operations management are going to be created within that time. In short, operations management is certainly an industry that is on the rise.

What about the salary?

Even if you are passionate enough about operations management to do it for free, that will not be the best option for you. However, you do not have to worry about working for free. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that those in operations management have some of the better-paid occupations in the country. Interestingly enough, you can find the best paying jobs in operations management in the Northeast part of the country. Three of the top-five best paying cities are located in New Jersey: Edison, Newark, and Trenton.

About the training

What is the ‘go-to’ level of education and degree for most people in operations management? Most have a degree in business administration and it often ranges between a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. However, the organization hiring ultimately decides on the specific degree required. You can gain a promotion with the company thanks to significant experience with the company itself.

If you are interested in becoming more desirable elsewhere (or getting your bosses to have another look at your salary), you are able to complete certification programs in production and inventory management with the Association for Operations Management. Many companies are already filtering out potential candidates with these certifications as part of their search criteria.

What about the potential for upward mobility?

If you are interested in climbing the corporate ladder, you have the option to do so with operations management. In fact, the upward mobility in operations management is above average, meaning that most people who excel at their job have a chance to move up.

You do have to be stress resistant

If you have learned anything about operations management by browsing through the job description, you will know that people in operations management have a great deal of responsibility within a company. Even though this means a nice salary, good upward mobility and a number of other perks, the stress level that people in operations management feel is considered ‘above average’. This means that you have to be comfortable working under pressure.

No need to be utterly flexible

Even though you have to be adaptable, operations management does not mean that you have to be in the office at 4 AM in the morning very often. As far as job flexibility is concerned, operations management ranks about average.
